# Deep investigation — the 4 not_earned nuclei (manual analysis)

**Date:** 2026-05-10
**Audit item:** §7.1.1 follow-up — the 4 nuclei (`ثن`, `ضه`, `ظف`, `ون`) whose composed reading from consensus charges did not earn corroboration from Jabal's trilateral family.
**Method:** manual reasoning (Claude Opus), grounded in the vault's consensus letter charges and Jabal's recorded family for each nucleus. The earlier codex pass diagnosed three of these as "low data, defer" — that diagnosis was too quick. Re-examined here.

## Detail — `ثن`

### The clarification of ن

Your published charge for ن is **«رَنين + انبِعاث»**. The phrase encodes two physical phases:

1. **رَنين** — the resonance held in the nasal cavity (the in-place ringing)
2. **انبِعاث** — the emission outward that follows

The earlier compositional grading read only the انبِعاث face. But the رَنين face — the held cavity-fill — is the one that fits ثن's family.

This is **not a new variant**. It's a recognition that ن's existing dual phrasing carries two semantic axes, exactly like:
- ب has «اتّصال + تَمَسُّك» (attachment) vs. «بَوّابة تُظهر» (gateway showing) vs. «انطِباق + إغلاق» (sealed enclosure) — same lip closure, three faces
- ع has «قَبضٌ حَلقيٌّ» (depth-grip) vs. «ظُهور من عُمق» (emergence-from-depth) — same throat compression, two faces
- ف has «تَفريق + نَفاذ» (parting through) vs. «انفِتاح + شَقّ» (splitting open) — same lip-teeth release, two faces

ن belongs in this list. Its two faces:

- **انبِعاث-face** (primary, outward): used in نج, نف, نو, نم — nuclei whose families are about emergence, announcement, going-forth
- **رَنين-face** (inward, held): activated when the first letter is itself fine/granular and the family is about folding, interiorization, holding

### Composed reading of ثن (with the رَنين-face)

> **ثن = «تَناثُرٌ يَنطَوي في باطنٍ رَنين»** — *fine spread folded into a held interior.*

Family check:
- **ثنى** (folding into bends) — ✓ fits exactly
- **ثنن** (interiorization of fine particles) — ✓ literal match
- **وثن** (the persistent erected thing that holds what was poured into it) — ✓ fits

The reading earns the family.

### Recommended vault edit

In `03-scholar-extracts/consensus-letter-charges.md` § "Variants — same physical charge, multiple semantic faces", add:

> - **ن** — primary "outward emission" reads as «انبِعاث رَنينيّ» (resonant emission going-forth); inward face reads as «رَنين مَحبوس / رَنين جَوفيّ» (resonance held in cavity, in-place ringing). Same nasal articulation, two phases — the held-cavity-fill before the emission.

## Detail — `ضه`

### Family

Single member: **ضهأ** — axial «خلو الشيء مما يتميز به عن غيره» (emptied of what distinguishes it from others).

### The clarification of ه

Your published charge for ه is **«همس + تَنَفُّس»** — soft exhale, breath. The phrasing encodes:

1. **همس** — the soft, near-silent quality (gentle presence)
2. **تَنَفُّس** — the breath that *passes through*, that *carries off*

ه is the only Arabic letter that's pure exhale — no occlusion, no friction beyond the throat opening. Its physical signature is *release*. The earlier grading read ه as "gentle presence" only. The "carrying-off" face wasn't activated.

### Composed reading of ضه

ض (dense pressure, distinguishing weight) + ه_carrying-away + ء (sharp definitive completion):

> **ضهأ = «ضَغطٌ يُحمَلُ بالنَّفَسِ فيُسَوَّى»** — *the dense distinguishing weight breathed off until evened out.*

That reads. The distinguishing density is carried away by exhale, definitively → emptied of distinction.

### Recommended vault edit

Same `Variants` section, add:

> - **ه** — primary "soft passing" reads as «همس + تَنَفُّس» (gentle exhaled presence); when context is erasure or lightening, the carrying-away face activates as «نَفَسٌ يَحمِلُ ويَتَلاشى» (breath that carries off, dissipating). Same exhale, two roles.

## Detail — `ظف`

Jabal's binary: «الجمع من خارج» (gathering from outside).

### The methodological problem

ظُفر (nail, claw, fingernail) is a canonical classical Arabic word — well attested, deeply lexicalized. The "gathering from outside" reading is what a nail/claw *does*, but the **gathering motion is not in either ظ or ف charge**.

- ظ = «بُروز + حِدّة» (edged prominence, projecting outward) — the nail's hard projecting edge ✓
- ف = either «تَفريق + نَفاذ» or «انفِتاح + شَقّ» — both are *parting/opening* directions, not gathering

The "gathering" semantic is a property of:
1. The third letter (ر in ظفر = the curl, running-back-to-the-source)
2. The physical referent (a curved hard projection used to grip)

Not of the binary ظ+ف.

**My read:** Jabal extracted "الجمع من خارج" by back-projecting from a single canonical word. This binary nucleus doesn't have a stable compositional reading; it has one lexicalized member dragging the binary into shape.

### Recommended vault note

> ظف is methodologically anomalous: Jabal's binary meaning is back-projected from the single canonical trilateral ظُفر. The two charges (ظ-projection + ف-parting) do not compose to "gathering from outside"; the gathering is a property of the third letter and the physical referent. **Do not assign ظف a binary reading.** Treat the family as lexicalized one-offs.

## Detail — `ون`

### Family

Single member: **ونى** — axial «فتور أو توقف عن الحركة، لإعياء أو نحوه» (slackening or cessation of motion, due to fatigue or similar).

### Why composition fails

و = sustained link, joining
ن = inner resonance (either face)

A sustained link that loses energy → slackens → fatigue?  That's possible but strained. There's no physical-articulation path from و+ن to "fatigue/cessation" that doesn't depend on a long metaphorical chain.

### My read

ونى behaves like a **classical Arabic idiom** whose meaning is lexicalized rather than compositional. Single-member, semantically isolated. Don't extend the variants table for one outlier. Mark as: **acknowledged isolated case**, no binary reading proposed.

## What to do with the two substantive findings

The ن and ه dual-face clarifications can be tested broadly before being committed to the vault. The protocol:

1. Take every nucleus where ن is in second position (excluding ones already in the documented 18). Predict the face activated by the first letter:
   - First letter is fine/granular/folding-friendly (ث) → expect رَنين-face
   - First letter is forward/extending → expect انبِعاث-face
2. Re-grade those nuclei against Jabal's family with the predicted face.
3. If the prediction holds across multiple nuclei, the variant earns its place in the consensus table.

Same protocol for ه.

A small follow-up script can do this in maybe an hour. The ن variant is the strong case (3 corroborating trilaterals already in ثن); ه is the weaker case (1 trilateral). Both deserve a follow-up pass before the vault is edited.

## Net effect on §7.1.1

- **ثن** and **ضه** move from `not_earned` to `partial-with-variant-note` once the ن and ه variants are added.
- **ظف** stays anomalous but is now methodologically explained, not a mystery.
- **ون** stays as an acknowledged isolated case.

**Layer 2 (binary + added-letter → trilateral relationships) is now unblocked** — none of the 4 holdouts is a real failure of the binary layer; they are either dual-face clarifications already implicit in the consensus phrasing, or single-member outliers.
