# Consensus Letter Charges & Common Nuclei

## The core idea

Every Arabic letter carries a **phonetic charge**, a description of what the mouth, tongue, throat, or breath is doing when the sound is produced. Those physical gestures carry a recognizable semantic flavour (affirmation, extension, closure, cutting, flow, gathering). When letters combine, their charges compose. A **root-nucleus** (usually two letters) acts as the seed; the third letter of the trilateral root adds the final motion, and the full word lands on a specific instance of that composed motion.

The charges below are not invented. They are a shared reading anchored in Arabic phonetics and in the classical lexicons, distilled from a worked corpus across the published ayat. **Variants**, alternative phrasings of the same physical charge that emphasize a different semantic axis, are noted where the corpus has used them.

## The 28-letter consensus table

## Variants, same physical charge, multiple semantic faces

Every Arabic letter carries two semantic faces of the same physical articulation. The third letter of a trilateral root selects which face is active in any given nucleus. This section is the comprehensive 28-letter dual-face table, derived from a uniform empirical test across all 453 binary nuclei in Jabal's lexicon (see `jabal-letters.html` for the test results and per-letter evidence).

For each letter, the trilateral families in the nucleus catalog consistently activate one face or the other, establishing the dual-face structure as the rule of the system.

- **ء**, primary "sharp affirmation, beginning" reads as «تَأكيد + قَطع»; the boundary face reads as «قَطع + فَصْل» (cut that separates, decisive boundary, e.g. أَبَى, أَجَل, إِلَّا, مِائَة). Same glottal stop, two semantic faces, the cut opens (onset) or closes (demarcation).
- **ا**, primary "extension, sustained presence" reads as «امتداد صائت»; the projecting face reads as «امتداد منبسط» (open extending outward). Same prolonged breath, two semantic faces.
- **ب**, primary "attachment/holding" reads as «اتّصال + تَمَسُّك»; surface-of-presence reads as «بَوّابة تُظهر / ظهور + خروج»; sealed enclosure reads as «انطِباق + إغلاق». Same lip closure, three semantic faces.
- **ت**, calm completion reads as «امتداد لطيف + تَمام»; sharp dental pressure reads as «ضَغط + دِقّة + قَطع». Same tongue-to-teeth, two intensities.
- **ث**, primary "scattering, small-grained spread" reads as «تَناثُر + تَفَتُّت»; the densifying face reads as «تَجَمُّع دَقيق» (fine accumulation inward, e.g. ثَبَّتَ, ثَقُلَتْ, الثَّمَر). Same interdental breath, two semantic faces, scatters or densifies.
- **ج**, primary "gathering in a space" reads as «تَجَمُّع في حَيِّز»; the surfacing face reads as «بُروز من حَيِّز» (surfacing out of a space, e.g. جَهْرًا, الْجِنّ). Same mid-palate burst, two semantic faces, gathered-in or breaking-forth.
- **ح**, primary "living warmth that contains" reads as «حياةٌ حارّة + احتواء»; the radiating face reads as «نَفاذ حَيّ» (living penetration outward, e.g. الْحَيّ, الْحَرّ, التَّحْرِير). Same deep-throat friction, two semantic faces, warmth held or warmth radiating.
- **خ**, primary "rarefying, piercing through" reads as «تَخَلخُل + اختِراق»; the concealing face reads as «سَتر مُكَثَّف» (thick concealing inward, e.g. خَتَمَ, الْخَفِيّ). Same back-of-throat scratch, two semantic faces, rarefies or densifies into concealment.
- **د**, settled grounding reads as «ضَبط + ثَبات»; active inward push reads as «دَفع داخليّ ثابت». Same closure, two motions.
- **ذ**, primary "piercing from inside, fine bringing-out" reads as «نَفاذ + حِدَّة»; the inward-storing face reads as «ادّخار في الباطن» (held-inside concealing, e.g. ذُخْر, الذِّكْر). Same voiced interdental, two semantic faces, issues from interior or holds within.
- **ر**, primary "repetition, running, flow" reads as «تَكرار + جَريان»; the binding face reads as «جَريانٌ مُلتَئِم» (flow that binds inward, e.g. الرَّبّ, مَرْصُوص, التَّرْتِيل). Same tongue trill, two semantic faces, running out or fastening down.
- **ز**, sharp thrust reads as «اندفاع + اهتزاز قاطع»; fine penetration reads as «نَفاذ + حِدّة». Same voiced sibilant thrust, two intensities.
- **س**, primary "extending flow, fine streaming" reads as «امتداد + سَيَلان»; the held-flow face reads as «احتِواء سَيّال» (fluid held inside, e.g. السِّرّ, السَّكِينَة, السِّجْن). Same breathy sibilant, two semantic faces, flow released or flow contained.
- **ش**, primary "branching, scattering outward" reads as «انتشار + تَفَرُّق»; the embracing face reads as «اشتمال مُمتَدّ» (embracing inward spread, e.g. اشْتَمَلَ, شَغَفَ, شَدِيد). Same wide front-of-mouth breath, two semantic faces, scatters or envelops.
- **ص**, primary "hardness, sealed strength" reads as «صَلابة + إطباق»; the piercing face reads as «نَفاذ صُلب» (hard-piercing outward, e.g. اصْدَع, صَرَفَ). Same emphatic sibilant, two semantic faces, sealed-firm or hard-splitting.
- **ض**, primary "drawing-together with weight" reads as «ضَمّ + ثِقَل»; the spreading face reads as «انبِساط بِثِقَل» (heavy spreading outward, e.g. الضِّيَاء, الضُّحَى). Same emphatic voiced lateral, two semantic faces, draws-in or spreads-out under weight.
- **ط**, primary "broad heavy spreading" reads as «انبساط + انتشار ثَقيل»; the folding-in face reads as «انْقِباض ثَقيل» (heavy contraction inward, e.g. طُوًى, نَطْوِي, الطِّين). Same emphatic dental, two semantic faces, heavy-spread or heavy-fold.
- **ظ**, primary "pronounced surfacing, edged prominence" reads as «بُروز + حِدّة»; the held-shadow face reads as «ستر مُكَثَّف من باطن» (held shadow concealing, e.g. الظَّنّ, الظِّلّ, الظُّلْمَة). Same emphatic interdental, two semantic faces, surfaces or holds dense shadow.
- **ع**, the canonical «قَبضٌ حَلقيٌّ + شِدّة» also surfaces as «ظُهور من عُمق» when the verse is about emergence-from-depth (e.g. علم, عمل) rather than concentrated grip.
- **غ**, primary "concealing depth, covering" reads as «غَور يَستر»; the breaking-cover face reads as «بُروز من غَور» (emerging-from-concealment, e.g. الْغَاوِين, الْغُدُوّ, الْغَيْث). Same back-of-throat fricative, two semantic faces, covers or breaks cover.
- **ف**, the parting-through phrasing «تَفريق + نَفاذ» dominates; «انفِتاح + شَقّ» appears when the verse opens a closed thing (e.g. فَتَح, فَطَر).
- **ق**, primary "cutting precision, firm settling" reads as «قَطع + إحكام»; the firm-holding face reads as «اتِّصال مُحكَم» (firm holding inward, e.g. الْقَابِض, قَبْضَة, قَرَار). Same back-palate stop, two semantic faces, cuts or fastens.
- **ك**, primary "pressed closure, sealed cut" reads as «كَتم + قَطع»; the constrained-surfacing face reads as «بُروز مَكتوم» (constrained surfacing, e.g. كَشَفَ, كَفَى, الْكَلِمَة). Same unvoiced back-palate stop, two semantic faces, sealed-cut or constrained-emergence.
- **ل**, primary "attachment that extends, a bridge" reads as «تَعَلُّق + امتِداد»; the folding-in face reads as «اِنطِواء مُتَّصِل» (bound folding inward, e.g. الْتَفَّتِ, لَوَّوْا, لَفِيف). Same alveolar glide, two semantic faces, extends or folds.
- **م**, primary "gathering, sealing into a mass" reads as «تَجمُّع + تَلاصُق»; the projecting face reads as «بُروز ناتِئ» (emerging projection, e.g. مَدّ, مَدَدْنَا, الْمَلَأ). Same lip closure with nasal flow, two semantic faces, gathers or projects.
- **ن**, primary "inner resonance emitted outward" reads as «رَنين + انبِعاث»; the cavity-held face reads as «رَنين مَحبوس» (cavity-held resonance, activated in ثن, تن, طن, نن, هن, e.g. اثْنَيْنِ, الْوَتِين, الطِّين). Same nasal articulation, two phases, the cavity-fill before any emission, or the emission after.
- **ه**, primary "soft passing presence" reads as «همس + تَنَفُّس»; the carrying-away face reads as «نَفَسٌ يَحمِل ويَتَلاشى» (breath that carries off, e.g. Q 9:30 ضاهئون, هَوَى). Same pure exhale, two semantic faces, gentle held presence or carrying-away erasure.
- **و**, primary "binding, joining, sustained link" reads as «وَصل + ربط»; the linked-release face reads as «اِنفصال مع اِتِّصال» (linked release, e.g. تَوَلَّى, وَدَّعَ). Same rounded-lip sustain, two semantic faces, binds-in or releases-while-bound.
- **ي**, primary "gentle directed extension" reads as «امتداد + لِين + سَريان»; the soft-adherence face reads as «التِصاق ناعِم» (soft adherence, e.g. الْأَيْدِي, تَيَمَّمُوا, الْيَمّ). Same front-of-palate voiced glide, two semantic faces, extends gently or adheres softly.

**The methodological claim:** the dual-face structure isn't a special property of 6 letters, it's the universal structure of the Arabic phonetic-semantic system. Every letter's physical articulation carries two possible semantic directions. The trilateral family selects which is active.

When a new use-case appears, **prefer the primary charge** unless the context genuinely activates the variant axis. If a variant is used, it should be one already attested in the corpus, not a fresh invention.

## Common nuclei, the 18-nucleus shortlist

Many roots share a **nucleus**, the first two letters of the trilateral root carry the seed-meaning, and the third letter modifies it. These nuclei recur with consistent meanings across roots:

The nucleus reading does not replace the full root reading; it identifies the **seed-direction**, which the third letter then bends. For example: نج + و = «نَجا» (emergence-into-binding-completion = an escape that lands in safety), while نج + م = «نَجَم» (emergence-into-sealed-mass = a star, the emerged-and-set body).

> **Coverage note:** these 18 nuclei are a curated working set. Jabal's full corpus has **453 binary nuclei**; the shortlist captures the highest-frequency Quranic-relevant ones. > **Why 453, not 784?** With 28 letters, there are 28² = 784 mathematical L1·L2 possibilities. Of the 331 unattested pairs, **160 (58%) are phonotactically blocked** by known Arabic constraints: 28 alif-initial (ا is a vowel marker), 25 identical XX (OCP, Obligatory Contour Principle), 107 same-articulator-class (soft OCP, tongue-tip-twice, lips-twice). Only **155 pairs (20% of all 784) are true lexical gaps**, pairs Arabic could form but doesn't. The 155 gaps are the natural held-out test set for whether the model can become generative.

## Reading direction, letter → nucleus → root → word

Always build upward, never downward:

1. **Name the letters with their charges**, e.g. `ق (قطع+إحكام) + ر (تكرار+جريان)`.
2. **Form the nucleus** from the first two letters, e.g. `قر = إحكامٌ يَتكرّر`.
3. **Add the remaining letter(s) of the root**, stating the new motion, e.g. `+ أ (تأكيد+قوّة)`.
4. **State the full root meaning, literally**, e.g. «القرآن حرفيّاً = استقرارٌ مُحكَمٌ يَتكرّر ويُؤكَّد».
5. **Connect to how the word is used in context.** One sentence is enough.

## Worked examples

### القرآن, root ق-ر-أ
**ق** (قطع+إحكام) + **ر** (تكرار+جريان) → nucleus **قر** = a precision that repeats. + **أ** (تأكيد+قوّة). Literally: a firm settling that repeats and is affirmed, a gathering that does not scatter.

### فَطَرَ, root ف-ط-ر
**ف** (تفرّق+نفاذ) + **ط** (انبساط+انتشار) → nucleus **فط** = an opening that spreads. + **ر** (تكرار+جريان). Literally: to split open and draw out what was hidden. Hence **فطرة** = the original latent disposition before habit covers it.

### الحمد, root ح-م-د
**ح** (حياةٌ حارّة+احتواء) + **م** (تجمّع+تلاصق) → nucleus **حم** = a warm containment. + **د** (ضَبط+ثبات). Literally: a warm containment that settles. Hence **الحمد** = praise that holds, that does not scatter, that recognizes value before any benefit was received (vs. **شُكر** = thanks for a benefit received).

### رَبّ, root ر-ب-ب
**ر** (تكرار+جريان) + **ب** (اتّصال+تَمَسُّك) → nucleus **رب** = a flowing attached to its substrate, continuous holding-and-running. + tashdīd of ب (intensification). Literally: repeating attachment, holding-and-multiplying. The Rabb tends his charge by walking with it, not by ranking above it. ### العالَمين, root ع-ل-م
**ع** (قبضٌ حَلقيٌّ+شِدّة) + **ل** (تعلّق+امتداد) → nucleus **عل** = a depth-grip that extends. + **م** (تجمّع+تلاصق). Literally: a held-extension that gathers. Hence **عَلامة** (a mark held-and-attached so it gathers attention), **عِلم** (a held grasp that gathers what is grasped), **عالَم** (a domain held-together that bears a sign of its maker).

### نَجَّى, root ن-ج-و
**ن** (رَنين+انبِعاث) + **ج** (تَجَمُّع في حَيِّز) → nucleus **نج** = an inner emission gathering at a place. + **و** (وَصل+ربط). Literally: an inner emergence gathering at a higher binding-place. Rescue is not flight; it is gathered exit, settling in a connected safety.

### يَسومون, root س-و-م
**س** (امتداد+سَيَلان) + **و** (وَصل+ربط) → nucleus **سو** = a flowing extension that binds. + **م** (تجمّع+تلاصق). Literally: an extending-binding-gathering, the act of imposing a marker on a body and pushing it under that marker. Same root as **وَسم** (livestock branding): the signature imposed on a creature that transfers it from its own keeping to the keeping of the marker.

## Stability discipline

This table is meant to **stabilize** as the corpus grows, not oscillate. Variants noted above are the expected drift-window; beyond that drift, a reading is in tension with itself and needs review against the source scholars (see `Data raw/Languistic theories/`).
